Perched high in the dramatic Montserrat Mountains near Barcelona, Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in 1025 by Abbot Oliba. It is one of Catalonia’s most important spiritual and cultural sites.
The monastery is best known for the Black Madonna (“La Moreneta”), a revered statue of the Virgin Mary said to have been discovered in a cave around 880 AD. The site remains a major pilgrimage destination and home to the famous Escolania boys’ choir, one of the oldest in Europe.
Visitors can explore the basilica, museum, and surrounding mountain trails offering breathtaking views. Access is available by train, cable car, or funicular from Barcelona.
